The Bathyscaphe Trieste

This remarkable image celebrates the “Big Dive” in which the submersible Bathyscaphe Trieste reached the deepest point of the World Ocean, the Mariana Trench off Guam in the Pacific Ocean, on 23 January 1960 – a depth of 11 kilometres.

This beautiful artwork captures the moment at which the Bathyscaphe touches down on the fine sediment of the ocean floor. As the submarine reached the bottom, its occupants, Swiss engineer Jacques Piccard and US Navy submariner Don Walsh, saw a 'fish-like creature' swimming away.

Bathyscaphe Trieste proved the existence of life in the deepest part of the World Ocean, against all expectations. No one has ever visited such depths again, and today no sub can get close to the depths achieved by Trieste half a century ago. Bathyscaphe Trieste's 'Big Dive' will forever be one of the most important moments in marine exploration
