Description: Sea pens lie anchored upright in soft sediments in deep water as well as on the continental shelf. These beautiful octocorals have a single large polyp that serves as a stem, with rows of feeding polyps attached to form numerous feathery side branches facing into the current. This sea pen, Pteroeides bollonsi, is bioluminescent with waves of electric green bioluminescence propagating along the entire body.
