Common Name: Barreleye
Scientific Name: Opisthoproctus
Location: Mid-Atlantic Ocean
Description: The distinctive upward-pointing tubular eyes that give barreleyes or spookfishes their name are adapted for binocular vision at the expense of lateral vision. Surveying the waters above, the sensitive retinas of barreleyes are able to detect overhead prey in the faintest of ambient light, and their binocular vision allows the fish to accurately locate and consume small zooplankton
